Brussels, 30/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - The committee on the environment of the Parliament is in favour of strict and harmonised rules for the monitoring of the greenhouse gas emissions of the EU - including emissions from maritime transport - and of reports to be drafted in the framework of this monitoring.
In their adoption on Tuesday 29 May by a vast majority (48 votes in favour, one against and 4 abstentions) of the report by Bas Eickhout (Greens/EFA), the MEPs are getting behind draft legislation aiming to transpose into European law one of the obligations stemming from the climate agreements of Cancun (COP 16, 2010). “Internationally, Europe has stopped calling for greater transparency in actions carried out by third countries to cut their emissions. Reliable, precise and timely data provided on the EU's greenhouse gas emissions are therefore vital to gain our partners' confidence”, the rapporteur explained. Amongst other things, the MEPs would like the member states to establish a trajectory making it possible to achieve the target of a reduction in emissions of between 80 and 95% between now and 2050 (compared to 1990 figures) for the lowest possible cost, and they would also like requirements on the data to be provided for the reports on maritime emissions to be established from 2013.
