EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / (ae) jha

22/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - Criminal law, Parliament wants clear criteria. On 22 May in Strasbourg, MEPs argued for solid criteria to be introduced for the implementation of new European legislation on criminal law, which respects the principles of proportionality and subsidiarity, as well as absolute respect for the principle of the presumption of innocence. MEPs sent out this message by subsequently adopting the report by Cornelis de Jong (GUE/NGL, Netherlands) on the action the Commission should launch in the field of criminal law. All initiatives introduced by the Commission should ensure that the rights of suspects and the accused are respected, indicates a press release. The Commission is looking at the possibility of introducing proposals on the protection of how the financial markets operate, the protection of the EU's financial interests, the protection of the euro against counterfeiting and serious infringements to data protection rules.
