11/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - Support for Burma/Myanmar to be discussed at Foreign Affairs Council. At their meeting on Thursday 10 May, EU High Representative Catherine Ashton told Shwe Mann, the Speaker of Burma/Myanmar's Lower House, that foreign ministers would discuss his country when they meet on Monday 14 May, “with a view to promoting an ambitious and coordinated EU approach in the area of development assistance”. Welcoming the EU support, Shwe Mann stressed the “deep commitment to the on-going democratic reforms and the need for inclusive process” in his country, and highlighted, too, Aung San Suu Kyi's taking of her seat in the parliament. Ashton and Shwe Mann also discussed the situation in the ethnic regions, the efforts to address the conflict in the Kachin area and possible EU support to help underpin ceasefires and turn them into lasting peace.
