Brussels, 11/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 14 May, the European Commission will present its passenger car taxation plans. This involves guidelines on the vignettes applicable to cars as a fee for using road infrastructure. This instrument has already been used by a handful of countries, such as Slovenia and Austria, but these two countries have officially been notified that their systems discriminated against foreign drivers. Although an increasing number of other countries, such as Belgium, are displaying interest in this toll system, the Commission will be presenting a communication that should introduce standards for using the vignette. Taxation plans should affect all car users in the same way by, it would appear, promoting a system related to the distance travelled and not the time when road infrastructure is used. There is already similar legislation exclusively applicable to heavy-duty vehicles, the Eurovignette. (MD/transl.fl)
