Basque country - EP's support for Aiete declaration - Hollande's too?

Brussels, 11/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - More than 60 former MEPs are backing the Aiete Declaration, which seeks a peaceful resolution to the armed conflict in the Basque Country. François Hollande will also be asked to support it. The resolution calls for an end to all armed action in the Basque Country and calls for action to be taken to promote reconciliation. It was drawn up in October 2011, at the end of the international conference of San Sebastian.

On Thursday 10 May, in her presentation of the list of MEPs and former parliamentarians that support this declaration, Frieda Brepoels (Greens/EFA, Belgium) recognised that there was still a lot of work to do. Former MEP Koldo Gorostiaga, representing the Basque nationalist Batasuna party between 1999 and 2004 announced that François Hollande, the new president of France, would also be invited to support this declaration: “The Aiete Declaration is certainly addressed to him. The new French president is also a former MEP (Ed: from July to December 2009). We will send him a personal invitation to support us.” (MD/transl.fl)
