The pro-European parties - the Democratic Party (PD) of outgoing President Boris Tadic and the Serbian Socialist Party (SPS) - agreed on Wednesday 9 May to form a coalition. The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), which came out on top in the parliamentary elections on 6 May, will, therefore, remain in opposition. Under the terms of the agreement, the SPS has agreed to back Tadic against his Progressive Party opponent, Tomislav Nikolic, in the second round of the presidential election on 20 May. In the parliamentary elections, the SNS won 73 of the 250 seats, ahead of the PD (67 seats) and the SPS (44 seats). Socialist leader Ivica Dacic is the favourite for the post of prime minister but the new government is not expected to be formed until after the second round of voting in the presidential election.
