Rumours of €200 billion Marshall Plan quashed

Brussels, 30/04/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 30 April 2012, the European Commission quashed rumours in Spanish newspaper El Pais on Sunday 29 April that the Commission was preparing a veritable Marshall Plan for growth in Europe. “Some seem to only now be discovering the EU growth agenda. Broader focus and even more commitment, engagement with need for structural funds and relentless effort on growth”, said a European Commission spokesperson, adding that the figures being put forward had been made up and the EUROPE 2020 Strategy endorsed by the European Summit and the European Parliament sets out targets for high-growth industries without promising economic stimulus packages. The spokesperson added that there was no alternative to budget consolidation, but the EUROPE 2020 strategy would act alongside spending cuts. The Commission wants the EIB to be given a further €10 billion in capital and is calling for rapid endorsement of the project bond idea in order to get pilot schemes off the ground in high-growth industries.
