Brussels, 30/04/2012 (Agence Europe) - The president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, does not intend to travel to Ukraine or participate in any event in the country for the time being, according to an announcement made on Monday 30 April by a spokesperson for the Commission, Pia Ahrenkilde. She has thus provided a reply to questions asked in the press regarding the participation of European Commission members at the Euro 2012 football competition, whilst the commissioner for fundamental rights, Viviane Reding, explained that due to the human rights situation in the country, particularly the situation regarding the former prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, she would not be going to the inaugural Euro 2012 football match, jointly organised with Poland (see EUROPE 10604). Ahrenkilde emphasised that there had not been any discussion or position taken by the college of commissioners on the subject but that the Commission had very significant concerns regarding what was happening in Ukraine. She said that she hoped that there would be developments in the country, which would enable them to overcome this very serious situation. (CG/transl.fl)
