12/04/2012 (Agence Europe) - Green MEPs at places of detention for migrants in Roissy and Strasbourg. MEPs from the Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament will travel on 17 April to where migrants are being held at Roissy airport and in Strasbourg. They are acting in support of the “Open Access” campaign. Every year, the Greens point out, some 600,000 migrants, including children, are detained in Europe “solely on the grounds that they have not complied with the rules of EU countries on non-nationals entering and residing. Very often it is no more than an administrative decision that leads to detention.” In most EU countries, access to these places of detention by journalists and members of civil society is heavily restricted and bound by rules. “Open Access” condemns this state of affairs and calls on the media and members of civil society to request permission to visit so that light may be shed on the conditions under which migrants are confined in EU countries, the group adds.
