05/04/2012 (Agence Europe) - Frankfurt Airport closed at night. Night flights are to be banned to and from the Frankfurt Airport, to the great disappointment of the airline, Lufthansa, which estimates losses caused by the ban at €40 million. The federal court in Leipzig has confirmed the decision by a court in Hesse, the region where the airport is located. The situation is a classic example illustrating the motivations of the European Commission which, last year, passed the airport package, which aims, inter alia, to review European regulations on noise pollution. The Commission is to take on a monitoring role in the national processes for establishing noise-related restrictions in airports. Although residents must be protected from excessive airport noise, this must not be to the cost of the region's economic growth, the Commission states. (MD/transl.jl)
