De Sarnez urges new balance in relations with China

Brussels, 28/03/2012 (Agence Europe) - The report by Marielle De Sarnez (ALDE) was adopted by a comfortable majority in the international trade committee at the European Parliament on Tuesday 27 March. This report calls for trade relations between the EU and China to be reassessed. Since the middle of last March, trade relations have been subject to a complaint lodged at the WTO regarding restrictions on exports of rare earth. At the beginning of the year it was already the subject of a complaint for introducing the same restrictions on the export of raw materials. De Sarnez stated that “trade between China and the European Union is unbalanced as the trade deficit to the detriment of the EU has more than tripled in 10 years. China must adopt a fairer trade ethic in compliance with its WTO commitments.” The French MEP insisted that China “must also stop all monetary dumping letting the yuan appreciate. The European Union must require true reciprocity from its trade partner” in the field of public procurement, the protection of intellectual property rights and respect for EU environmental and health standards by Chinese products.
