EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) democracy

15/03/2012 (Agence Europe) - Parliamentary committee adopts resolution on FEDEM. The rapporteur on the creation of a European fund for democracy (FEDEM), Alexander Graf Lambsdorff (ALDE), welcomed, on Tuesday 13 March, the previous day's adoption in the European Parliament's committee on foreign affairs (by 58 votes to 2) of his proposal for a resolution in favour of creating the fund. He explained: “The European fund for democracy will support those who fight for democracy and fundamental rights in difficult circumstances. (…) All should receive rapid, and less bureaucratic, support than before.” He went on to say: “Those who fight for freedom and self-determination do not have time to meet fastidious subsidy demands. That is why we need the fund. The EU will be able to support democratic players in a swifter and more flexible manner.” (CG/transl.jl)
