According to an initial estimate published by the EU's statistical office, Eurostat, on Thursday 15 March, the number of people in work fell by 0.2% in the eurozone and 0.1% in the EU27 in the fourth quarter of 2011, compared with the previous quarter. In Q311, employment fell by 0.2% in both the eurozone and the EU27. Eurostat points out that compared with Q410, employment fell by 0.2% in the eurozone, but remained unchanged in the EU27, in the third quarter of 2011. Taking the year 2011 as a whole, the number of people in work increased by 0.2% in the eurozone and by 0.3% in the EU27, compared with a decrease of 0.5% in both areas in 2010. Eurostat estimates that in Q411, some 223 million men and women had a job in the EU, 146.4 million of them in the eurozone. (OL/transl.fl)
