Brussels, 27/02/2012 (Agence Europe) - Twenty-one senior officials in the Belarus police and legal apparatus (two senior police officers and 19 magistrates considered responsible for the arrest and sentencing of opponents to the regime) will have visa bans imposed on them and their assets frozen on Tuesday 28 February. The announcement was made by a European diplomat on Monday 27 February. The decision, initially expected to be taken on Monday, will be adopted without discussion during the General Affairs Council on Tuesday. Without revealing the name of the minister, our source explained that “one of the foreign affairs ministers did not want to inform the press that the Council has adopted any measures”. These 21 individuals have been added to the list of more than 200 people and three organisations linked to the regime, and are already subject to restrictive measures. The EU has also imposed an arms embargo. (CG/transl.fl)
