Brussels, 27/02/2012 (Agence Europe) - Cyprus, Italy and Romania have failed to fully transpose the European Commission's Directive 2010/30/EU on energy labelling international law. This directive covers all energy related products, their promotion and use in public markets. The three countries were sent reasoned opinions on Monday 27 February calling on them to rectify their shortcomings. They had already been sent warning letters in July 2011 and now have two months to comply with their legal obligations or they could find themselves in the dock at the European Court of Justice. The directive plays a key role in the promotion of energy efficiency and raising consumers' awareness about energy savings by providing them with comparative information on the energy consumption of the products they purchase. It also encourages manufacturers to develop highly energy efficiency products. The definition of common European thresholds on energy efficiency (from A++ to G) provides member states with a clear framework on obligations they need to fulfil in this field. (EH/transl.fl)
