Kroes welcomes American “do-not-track” decision

Brussels, 27/02/2012 (Agence Europe) - Digital Strategy Commissioner Neelie Kroes has welcomed the progress made by the US administration on the protection of the private data of internet users. On 23 February, the White House unveiled an internet user protection Bill which would require private companies not to record information on consumers without their express authorisation (“do-not-track” measures). In her blog, Kroes says that she supports these measures which provide “a valuable safeguard when you're browsing online”. Tracking online can bring benefits for users, for example, with tailored information, but it is for the user to decide whether or not to divulge their information. That similar positions have been adopted on either side of the Atlantic sends a clear signal to the industry on the use of private data, the commissioner said. (IL/transl.rt)
