Obama administration presents its internet users' charter

Brussels, 23/02/2012 (Agence Europe) - On 23 February, the Obama administration brought forward its charter on the rights of US internet users, part of a broader White Paper on the protection of the data of online consumers. This charter and White Paper, matching the European debate launched by Viviane Reding on 25 January on the recast of the 1995 directive, seek to strengthen the privacy rights of internet users while ensuring the internet remains a driver of growth and innovation, says a press release from the US Embassy to the EU. The US efforts also seek to give internet users more control over their data. In the EU, the flagship measure is the “right to be forgotten”, that is, the complete deletion of data, an issue which is of some concern on the other side of the Atlantic.
