Brussels, 03/02/2012 (Agence Europe) - Slovakian MEP Anna Zaborska (EPP) told Agence Europe on Thursday 2 February that “a lot of MEPs of all the Parliament's political groups” from the smaller and medium-sized European countries are against the proposal byAndrew Duff (ALDE, UK) for a transnational list with 25 candidates, in addition to national lists, at the European elections. She said that the Slovakian MEPs feared that Duff's plan would seriously damage proportional representation, with negative consequences for small states. “We want to keep things as they are. We want the focus to continue to be on the real challenges. Personally, I fail to see how such an ill thought-out experiment could help Europe resolve its serious economic problems”, she added.
The Duff report was approved by the constitutional affairs committee on 26 January. It must now be passed by the plenary session and win the approval of Council. (CG/transl.rt)
