On Saturday 28 January, the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, Catherine Ashton, welcomed the decision taken by the Guatemalan parliament on 26 January to ratify the Rome Statute, which establishes the International Criminal Court. “This decision is a strong signal confirming the commitment of the government and the legislative power to the rule of law and an international rules-based order”, Ashton explained. The EU looks forward to swift completion of the ratification process, she added.
