Strasbourg, 17/01/2012 (Agence Europe) - Hannes Swoboda of Austria was elected on Tuesday 17 January as leader of the Socialist & Democrat Group at the European Parliament. Swoboda gathered 102 votes out of 180 in a secret ballot (the absolute majority being 93), compared to 45 for Catherine Trautmann of France and 37 for Stephen Hugues of the UK. This is the first time that the three candidates have run for the post.
