Brussels, 12/01/2012 (Agence Europe) - Miguel Angel Moratinos, the former Spanish Foreign Minister and an enthusiastic Euro-Mediterranean supporter, regrets that the EU's “ambiguous” response to the “Arab revolutions”. In an article in El País published on 10 January, he said that Europe's response has been “both late and insufficient at political, economic and financial levels”.
He said that the EU's attitude “cannot be justified by internal and international crises” and its silence, as well as its “ambiguous” response, “cannot be understood by the Arab world”. He pointed out that, “it took two months (after the 'revolutions') for the EU to say anything” but that no major political, economic or financial poisons have been made. He did indicate, however, that it had demonstrated some sense by nominating a special representative (Ed: his former colleague Bernardino Léon), but that the latter's mandate was limited and, “he does not have the resources to take effective action”.
