Brussels, 12/01/2012 (Agence Europe) In her new Twitter account on Wednesday 11 January, the European commissioner for home affairs, Cecilia Malmström, urged President Barack Obama to keep his promise and close down the Guantanamo camp, 10 years after it had been opened.
“It is shameful that prisoners are detained without trial or without any judgement being made. Mr Obama, it is time to keep your promise”, she said. Almost 170 people are still imprisoned in this camp, which, according to the promises made by Barack Obama in 2008, should have been closed down at the beginning of 2010. The project to close down the camp currently looks like it is going nowhere. Many NGOs see the Guantanamo camp as symbolic of total violation of human rights and of the rights of the accused.
