Brussels, 30/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - Between 90,000 and 110,000 jobs are expected to be created in Greece by 2015, through better management of structural funds in the country. These estimates are included in the updated list of priority projects that will be co-funded in Greece.
The list was published following a meeting with Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner for Regional Development, and the governors for the Greek regions and mayors of the biggest cities in the country. Project priorities have been revised according to their added value in terms of growth and employment and optimising results stemming from European structural funds. To achieve this objective, the list specifically nominates heads of projects (generally the town mayors, regional governors, ministers or indeed the presidents or managing directors of charities or companies), as well as the amount granted by the EU for the co-funding, in addition to the estimated date for completing the project in question.
The main sectors in which these projects will be undertaken are: energy (modernisation of the electricity grid, priority on renewable energies), innovation (particularly with regard to SMEs), entrepreneurship, transport (modernisation of ports and airports, road and rail), improved public administration (especially through the use of computer technology), the environment (water management, particularly drinking water), culture, tourism, health and education infrastructures. Together with the taskforce, the restructuring of projects supported by European funds forms part of the European Commission's assistance to Greece. (MD/transl.fl)
