Brussels, 28/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - The high representative of the EU called for calm in Egypt on 26 November. “Violence must stop and the rule of law has to be maintained”, stressed Catherine Ashton, who added that she was “deeply concerned” by the clashes between demonstrators and security forces. She called for an independent investigation into these “disturbing events” to be carried out and for those responsible to be held accountable. Ashton also called on the authorities to release people detained “for peacefully expressing their views” and urged them to “honour their promise” to end military trials for civilians.
Ashton also called for power to be moved quickly to civilian rule. “All political parties should reaffirm their commitment to the democratic process that Egypt has embarked upon. The swift shift of power to civilian rule is a key element of the transition and should happen as soon as possible on the basis of an inclusive dialogue”, she stressed, adding that she had taken good note of the important commitments made by the SCAF in this regard.
Ashton concluded by stating that the forthcoming elections, which began on 28 November, are “a very important step”. (CG/transl.fl)
