Brussels, 28/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - On 26 November, the high representative of the EU, Catherine Ashton, and the enlargement commissioner, Stefan Füle, hailed the “calm and peaceful atmosphere” in which the Moroccan parliamentary elections were held on Friday 25 November, with “increased voter turn-out and on the basis of an improved electoral framework following recent constitutional reforms”. These elections constitute an “important step” in the process of reforms. “The newly elected parliament and future government now face the important challenge of taking forward political, economic and social reforms”, Ashton and Füle stressed, adding that they would continue to encourage the “swift and effective implementation” of these reforms.
The president of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, lamented the fact that the EU had not been invited to send an electoral observation mission.
The Islamists of the Justice and Development party won 107 of the 395 seats in the Chamber of Representatives. (CG/transl.fl)
