Brussels, 18/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - Andris Piebalgs, European Development Commissioner, will be flying to Togo on Sunday. This will provide an opportunity for him to take stock of the situation with President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, Prime Minister Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo and other government members, on the results of cooperation and development rekindled with Togo end 2007. The commissioner will also discuss priorities with his interlocutors for consolidating democracy and promoting economic development in that country. Speaking on Friday, Piebalgs said before leaving: “Since the EU resumed its cooperation with Togo, we have already seen promising results in a number of key sectors such as public finance and education, where the percentage of the population able to read and write has increased from 56% to 70% in just five years”. The commissioner will also take part in the 22nd session of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly (JPA), which will bring together in Lomé (from 19 to 23 November) 78 MEPs and as many elected representatives of ACP countries, bound to the EU under the Cotonou agreement.
