Brussels, 10/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - Before a robust intervention on the part of the European commissioner for climate action, Connie Hedegaard, the parliamentary committee on transport (TRAN) gave figures, on Thursday 10 November, to show the impact that transport has on the environment. Data was compiled by the European Environment Agency (EEA) in its Transport and Environment Report 2010. The EEA executive director, Jacqueline McGlade, said there were positive trends in the reduction of CO2 emissions but that efforts should continue. To achieve this, she suggested that MEPs set up more incentives to compensate behaviour in favour of environmentally-friendly mobility, and energy taxation. She also took time over the problem of sulphur in navigation, especially on the harmful effect once in contact with CO2, and on the need to stop covering soil by infrastructure. She said that noise is also another kind of pollution. (MD/transl.jl)
