Brussels, 10/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - The status of EU strategic partner will be refused to Russia if the latter does not make an effort on human rights, stressed MEPs and members of NGOs in the recommendations from a conference on democracy and rule of law in Russia, published on Thursday 10 November. They explained that the EU-Russia cooperation agreement being negotiated should better reflect the realities in Russia and grant special attention to democracy and to the primacy of law. Russia should, they say, be refused strategic partnership status if no tangible progress is made in these areas. A new EU-Russia strategy is due to be adopted mid-2012. Participants have said that the EU-Russia summit, scheduled for December, should focus on democracy and rule of law. (CG/transl.jl)
