Brussels, 31/10/2011 (Agence Europe) - With its adoption of a joint resolution from the various political groups on Thursday 27 October, the European Parliament (EP) condemned the continued Chinese crackdown on Tibetan monasteries. It said is was deeply concerned by reports of eight Tibetan Buddhist monks and one nun having taken their own lives by setting fire to themselves since April in China's Sichuan province. MEPs condemned the continued severe measures imposed by the Chinese government on Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and called on the authorities to lift restrictions and to respect the rights of the Tibetans. They called on the EU to raise human rights issues and the situation of the Tibetans at the next EU-China summit. (CG/transl.rt)
