Jerzy Buzek visits Libya and Tunisia

Brussels, 28/10/2011 (Agence Europe) - The president of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, will be on an official visit to Libya on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October, where he will meet with representatives of the National Transition Council, civil society and the international community. After Mouammar Gaddafi's death, Buzek commented that the new democratic system in the country had to be based on the rule of law and respect for the fundamental rights of all citizens and he would be discussing these matters with his partners. Buzek will visit refugee camps at Shusha and Al-Hayat on the border between Libya and Tunisia.

On Monday 31 October, Jerzy Buzek will travel to Tunisia, a few days after the country's first free elections, where he will meet with European ambassadors, the head of the EU election observers and election experts. He will also meet the prime minister, Beji Caid Essebsi, the governor of the Central Bank, Mustapha Nabli, the president of the High Commission for Achieving the Aims of the Revolution, Political Reform and Democratic Transition, Iyadh Ben Achour, and the president of the Higher Independent Election Body, Kamel Jendoubi.
