Brussels, 28/10/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission decided on Thursday 27 October to close the infringement procedure against the port of Malmö in Sweden which, the Commission felt after an inspection in June 2010, had safety issues. Sweden had failed to apply correctly the European directive on improving port security (2005/65/EC), resulting in a reasoned opinion being sent by the Commission to Sweden one year later. Since then, Sweden has provided the Commission with a complete list of the ports applying the directive and has improved the situation in Malmö. The Commission decided, therefore, to close proceedings, though there remains the possibility of a further inspection of the port of Malmö at some point in the future. (MD/transl.rt)
