Drugs - legal harmonisation to better combat crime

Warsaw, 27/10/2011 (Agence Europe) - The EU and Eastern Europe are working on combating drug-related crime. In this field, “it is necessary to approximate laws on the prevention of and measures against drug-related crime, police cooperation and especially control of smuggling routes”, said Dana Sinant, who heads the drugs unit at DG Justice and Home Affairs at the European Commission. The head of the Polish police, Andrzej Matejuk, also gave his assurance that the “different legislative situations in the different states make it impossible to carry out an effective offensive together”. The European Commission is currently working on a contract with Russia against drug producers, due to be ready by the end of the year.

The Commission agrees it should adjust legislation to the rate of evolution of drug trafficking methods and emergence of new substances. It also provides for the establishment of new rules to step up EU control on chemical products used to manufacture medicines. Commission strategy involves closer cooperation at international level, especially with transit and production countries outside the EU, and also with countries considered as the main points of entry for medicines in Europe.
