Brussels, 26/10/2011 (Agence Europe) - A battle of wills is shaping up between the United States and the European Union over including aviation in the EU's carbon trading system (ETS). On Tuesday 25 October, after the vote in the US Chamber of Representatives approving a bill to ban US airlines making transatlantic flights from paying for emissions quotas under the ETS from 2012, EU Climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard tweeted: “We are confident that the US will respect EU law, as EU always respects US law. Why else would US airlines have brought the issue to court?” The EU is awaiting a ruling by the European Court of Justice in a dispute that saw the EU's line defended by the advocate-general in a preliminary opinion issued on 6 October (see EUROPE 10468), who argued that the US airlines call for the EU legislation to be dropped was not justified.
