Brussels, 04/10/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 3 October, Dutch ALDE MEP Jan Mulder was elected as the chair of the European Parliament's budgetary control committee, taking over from Luigi de Magistris (ALDE, Italy), who left the EP to become Mayor of Naples.
Mulder was put forward by the ALDE Group and was not opposed by anyone. Upon his election, he said he planned to allow each member to contribute to the debate and give the committee greater visibility, because he feels people often underestimate the importance of the committee's work. The committee deputy-chair, Bart Staes (Greens/EFA, Belgium), explained that Mulder had many years of experience at the budgetary control committee, of which he has been a member since 1994 (with a one-year break).
