Brussels, 04/10/2011 (Agence Europe) - Eurozone finance ministers reached unanimous agreement this week on the appointment of the German secretary of state for finance, Jörg Asmussen, to the Executive Board of the European Central Bank. Speaking after the Eurogroup meeting he had been chairing on Monday evening, the chair of the Eurogroup, Jean-Claude Juncker, said the meeting had decided that Jorg Asmussen would replace Jurgen Starck on the ECB's Executive Board. Following the resignation of former governor of the Bundesbank, Weber, the other German member of the ECB Governing Council, Starck, resigned in September 2011 because of his disagreement with the ECB buying struggling eurozone countries' sovereign debt. The economic and monetary affairs committee at the European Parliament will interview Asmussen shortly. Next month, the governor of Banca d'Italia, Mario Draghi, will replace Jean-Claude Trichet as President of the ECB for the next eight years. (MB/transl.fl)
