Brussels, 26/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - With two days to go before 28 September - the anniversary of the bloody crackdown by Guinean law enforcement forces against a peaceful demonstration organised two years earlier by the Forum of the Forces Vives of Guinea in a Conakry stadium - Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, calls on Guinean political leaders to enter dialogue and on the authorities to show restraint. “On the eve of the anniversary of the tragic events of 28 September 2009, which coincides with the call for a series of peaceful demonstrations, I call on all political leaders to choose dialogue, not confrontation. I am confident that the opposition will act constructively and responsibly and that authorities will exercise restraint and wisdom in ensuring that the security forces operate professionally and with respect of democracy and rule of law. An open dialogue between the government and the main representatives of the opposition is essential for the conduct of transparent, inclusive and peaceful parliamentary elections on 29 December 2011. These elections are fundamental for the political transition and national cohesion”, Ashton says in a press release published on Monday 26 September. She reiterates the EU's commitment to support Guinea which is completing its political transition with the setting in place of a new democratically elected National Assembly. (AN/transl.jl).
