Brussels, 23/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - European car manufacturers have drawn up a list of recommendations about the standardisation of recharging systems for electric cars, which should speed up the introduction of electric cars and end the current fragmentation of the electric car industry. The European car industry's proposals would allow the use of a single type of plug (known as “Type 2/Type 2 Combo”) for all car manufacturers, electricity suppliers and countries. The ball is now in the court of the regulatory authorities, explains Ivan Hodac, secretary general of ACEA, the European Association of Car Manufacturers: “We call on the European Commission, the standardisation bodies and the infrastructure providers to adopt these recommendations and clear remaining issues as soon as possible”. Once a single standard has been introduced, car manufacturers will be able to incorporate it into their production lines. Most commentators suggest that electric cars could make up between 3% and 10% of the market by 2020-2025, depending on the speed of action in dealing with the challenges surrounding electric cars.
