Füle - settlement of “Macedonia” issue would facilitate accession talks

Brussels, 22/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - Enlargemnet Commissioner Štefan Füle has underlined that settlement of the dispute with Greece over the name of “Macedonia” would considerably facilitate the beginning of accession talks with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). “We believe that the dialogue between Skopje and Athens has gathered an impetus that must not be lost”, he also said, following a meeting with FYROM Deputy Prime Minister Teuta Arifi.

The commissioner also welcomed the round table meeting held in Skopje on 14 September between the deputy prime minister and the media. In August, the OECD voiced concern over restrictions on the freedom of the press. “I strongly encourage all parties to pursue their efforts to maintain the dialogue between the government and the media community to discuss relevant issues and find mutually acceptable solutions”, Füle said.
