Anti-terrorist policy vote at EP postponed

Brussels, 13/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - At the request of the rapporteur, the European Parliament decided on Tuesday 13 September in Strasbourg to adjourn its vote on the report on the EU anti-terrorist policy balance sheet. The report will return to the EP's civil liberties, justice and home affairs committee so that it can add the necessary changes before submitting it to the plenary again. The decision to postpone the vote was approved by 400 votes, with 268 voting against and 6 abstentions.

The rapporteur Sophia in't Veld (ALDE, the Netherlands) indicated that the positions taken by the MEPs had changed and the controversy around this report had increased. She has therefore called for more time to develop a strong European Parliament position on this subject. The initial draft report called on the European Commission to proceed to an “exhaustive evaluation” of the cost, efficiency and impact on civil liberties of the anti-terrorist measures taken by the EU after 11 September 2001.
