Brussels, 12/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton has hailed, on behalf of the European Union, the adoption of a roadmap for ending the transition in Somalia, and urged all parties to ensure that it is implemented within the set timescale.
In a press release published on Friday 9 September, Ashton expresses her “great satisfaction for the outcome of the consultative meeting held in Mogadishu from 4 to 6 September, where key Somali leaders including representatives of the Transitional Federal Institutions, Puntland, Galmudug and Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama'a together agreed on a roadmap for completing the current transitional period”. Urging “the Transitional Federal Institutions and all its Somali partners to work effectively to ensure the implementation of this Roadmap in compliance with the agreed benchmarks and timelines” she gives assurances that the EU will work to achieve this end “as a member of the Technical Committee foreseen by the roadmap to facilitate cooperation among the Somali parties and with its international partners”. Ashton confirmed, too, EU commitment to alleviating the consequences of the worsening humanitarian situation, restore security and contribute to peace, development and internal reconciliation.
