Brussels, 01/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - At the EU Management Committee meeting on Thursday 25 August, the European Commission agreed to the import of a further 111,732 tonnes of sugar at reduced rates of duty. Measures of this sort facilitate sugar supply in the EU.
This quantity will be broken down as follows: 83,535 tonnes of raw sugar for refining with a minimum import duty of €170.06 per tonne; 757 tonnes of raw cane sugar not for refining with a minimum import duty of €190 per tonne; and 27,440 tonnes of white sugar at a minimum import duty of €250 per tonne.
Over three awards of contracts, the total reduced-rate import quotas stands at 328,304 tonnes: 152,208 tonnes on 28 July (see EUROPE 10429), and 64,364 tonnes on 14 July.
On 27 May of this year, the Commission decided to authorise the reduced-rate import of sugar by means of a system of calls for tender. At the same time it agreed to the duty-free import into the EU of 200,000 tonnes of sugar between 1 July and 30 September. (L.C./transl.rt)
