As tension falls, UN consults

Brussels, 27/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - The dialogue called for by the EU (see EUROPE 10427) to reduce tensions between Serbia and Kosovo is bearing its first fruits: the Kosovo police special forces have left the Brnjak and Jarinje check points in the north which they occupied on Monday evening, and normal customs operations have resumed. The presence of police officers had annoyed the - majority Serbian - local population and, on Tuesday evening, a Kosovar policeman was killed. Agreement between the two parties was reached thanks to mediation by General Erhard Buelher, Commander of KFOR, the NATO mission to Kosovo. The action taken by Pristina is of concern to the international community, worried about the turn in the dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, restarted in March on the initiative of the EU, after more than three years. Belgrade wanted an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, which, for the moment, will hold closed-door consultations on Tuesday 2 August. Serbian police forces near the border with Kosovo have been placed on a state of alert. (G.Ba/Gp/transl.rt)
