Polish presidency priorities

Brussels, 20/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - One of the main priorities of the Polish Presidency in health care is to reduce inequality between European citizens when it comes to accessing information and health care. The Presidency will develop action based on the promotion of healthy and balanced diets, as well as physical activity and sport. In the area of chronic illness, it will focus on respiratory diseases affecting children. The Presidency will also tackle communication and behavioural difficulties affecting children. The work of the Presidency will aim to rapidly detect problems through innovative methods using new technologies based on best practices and increased cooperation between member states. Care for elderly patients affected by communication difficulties and their insertion into society will also be part of the programme. The Polish Presidency also intends to continue its work on the prevention and treatment of brain disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. This work is indispensable given the ageing population in Europe and the challenges currently confronting member states. A debate on this subject will be organised in an effort to more clearly define priorities regarding research, diagnosis and innovative treatments and to examine the social integration of the elderly affected by these diseases. In addition to this, and depending on the interest demonstrated by member states, the Polish Presidency also intends to launch work on the partnership for innovation through the promotion of active ageing, online health, resistance to antibiotics and access to reliable information for patients.
