Brussels, 18/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - The 27 countries of the European Union should do more to help with efforts to resettle refugees currently stranded on the border between Libya and Tunisia, who are unable to return to their homes. This plea was made by six members of the European Parliament who went to visit the refugee camps on 13-16 July, particularly the Shousha camp, which currently hosts 3,700 people from 22 different countries, such as Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia, the delegation explains in a press release. The delegation was made up of Simon Busuttil (EPP, Malta), Claude Moraes (S&D, UK), Judith Sargentini (Greens/EFA, Netherlands), Agustín Díaz de Mera (EPP, Spain), Nathalie Griesbeck (ALDE, France) and Sylvie Guillaume (S&D, France). They met Tunisian officials and international agencies such as the HCR. They hope that their visit will be a “lesson” for the EU member states and the home affairs ministers, who were meeting in Sopot (Poland) on Monday 18 July, the delegation stated. It went on to express its disappointment at the “weak response given by member states” compared to the efforts made by countries like Norway, the United States and Canada, or even Tunisia which, despite having just gone through its own revolution, has agreed to welcome a large number of refugees onto its territory.
