Development in non-linear services

The global television and video market is expected to experience average growth of 4% per year up to 2020, according to forecasts made by IDATE, a company specialising in new technologies in its “Future TV: 2020” report. This development, however, will vary from one region of the world to another. BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) will therefore be the main drivers of growth, together with countries in the east. On the other hand, Western Europe and the US will see annual increases limited to around 2%. Development will affect the various services in the sector differently. Linear services are expected, at best to remain stable, whereas real long-term growth will come from nonlinear services, such as video on demand, per unit or on subscription or in the replay or catch-up TV sectors. These new services could possibly develop at a constant annual pace of 20% and gradually overtake linear television. New services (fixed and mobile) will continue their upward rise, says IDATE, accounting for 12% of the video market in 2015 and 20% in 2020. Broadband internet will account for more than half (51%) of the market as opposed to 27% for mobiles and 22% for managed networks (cable, satellite, terrestrial or IP TV). (I.L./transl.fl)
