Tusk confident after setting out programme for Parliament

Brussels, 06/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - “The hysterical reactions of some MEPS show that we were right on target”, said Prime Minister Donald Tusk at the press conference which followed the presentation of the Polish Presidency's programme at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday 6 July. “Our vision of Europe may be viewed as conventional and for some it is banal even”, however, backing “stronger integration, reduction of borders and (having) the courage to enlarge the EU” is, in current circumstances, a real challenge. It is a challenge the Polish Presidency will take on with the knowledge that it has received “the strong support of most of the European Parliament”, Tusk stated with confidence. Parliament President Jerzy Buzek felt that that the lively debate in plenary session should be seen as a sign of a democracy that is working well. According to Commission President José Manuel Barroso, the reactions of the eurosceptics bear witness to an unease in the face of “such sincere and optimistic” commitment by Poland in the push for “greater integration”. What Buzek expects of the Polish Presidency, and in the sure and certain knowledge that it will succeed, “is that it brings a change of mood in Europe”. “I share that optimism”, added Barroso simply.
