Network involved in illegal immigration broken up

Brussels, 06/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - Eurojust and Europol issued a press release on Tuesday 5 July, announcing that a Chinese network involved in illegal immigration to the United Kingdom had been broken up. In the second half of June, “arrests were made in a coordinated operation involving France, Portugal and the UK”, the two agencies report. The investigation in Paris revealed the network, which operated mainly in the Paris region, with connections to Portugal and the UK. The investigation in Portugal established that Chinese suspects were “able to arrange fraudulently obtained documents (such as work permits and residence permits) for irregular migrants, as well as counterfeit visas, and identity and travel documents”. In the UK, the enquiries focused on suspects involved in organising transport through the Channel, explain Eurojust and Europol. In total, 29 arrests were made. (S.P./transl.fl)
