Poland eyes economic growth as it takes over at EU helm

Brussels, 01/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - Poland has taken over the reins of the European Union's six-month rotating presidency for the first time ever, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk set to lead ceremonies in Warsaw to mark the occasion. Poland has set itself an ambitious agenda, aiming chiefly to spark economic growth. It faces a mammoth task in preparing the EU's multi-annual budget and trying to encourage reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, which eats up around 40 percent of the budget, as well as finalise the process of developing a single market. As part of its “Secure Europe” initiative, Warsaw wants to improve energy security, and beef up the role of the Frontex borders agency. It also aims to strengthen the EU's military and civilian capabilities and try to foster more EU-NATO dialogue. On foreign policy, Poland wants to enhance partnerships with neighbouring countries and in particular those shaken by the Arab Spring uprisings, support the EU aspirations of Western Balkan nations, and move forward on membership talks with Iceland. It also hopes to complete a new framework for cooperation with Russia. (LoC)
