Prospect of free trade with Indonesia

Brussels, 28/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 28 June, Karel De Gucht was handed a report from a joint group of European and Indonesian industrial, governmental and academic representatives (Vision Group) on the feasibility of a free trade agreement between the EU and Indonesia. Bilateral trade reached €20 billion in 2010. During a presentation organised by the CEPS think tank, the trade commissioner welcomed the high level of ambition shown by the Vision Group for an agreement based on a triangular structure, with chapters dedicated to market access, trade and investment facilitation, and capacity-building. The Vision Group report suggests 95% liberalisation of tariff lines, of which 95% would be covered over a period of 9 years, services, environmental exchange - and includes the reduction of non-tariff barriers. Investment and intellectual property would also be covered. A second EU-Indonesia free trade bilateral agreement would, on the Indonesian side, provide an additional 1.3% of GDP growth in 15 years' time, i.e. €6.8 billion. (E.H./transl.jl)
