European banking authority and transparency

Brussels, 06/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - Having concluded an investigation which it launched in the wake of a complaint against the Committee of European Banking Supervisors (CEBS), which is now the European Banking Authority (EBA), European Ombudsman Nikiforos Diamandouros, on Monday 6 June, welcomed the latter's intention to “fully apply the transparency rules of the European Union”.

In October 2010, the CEBS held a public hearing on draft guidelines on remuneration policies in the European financial sector. A representative of a Swedish financial sector employees' union attended this hearing. In November, he asked the CEBS to send him the list of attendees, which it refused to do. The complainant then brought the matter to the Ombudsman. In January 2011, the CEBS became the European Banking Authority, which then took over responsibility for replying to the Ombudsman. The EBA said that it was making all necessary efforts to comply with the transparency rules of the EU and has divulged the list in question. The complainant has thanked the EBA for its cooperation and the Ombudsman for his work. (O.L./transl.fl)
